Attic Insulation

Why is having quality insulation in your home, specifically your attic, so important?

When it comes to roofing, there are two layers. The exterior, which are your shingles, tiles, and metal, protect your home from the outside world, like the elements. Then there is the part you can’t see, the internal structure, also known as the the truss. This helps to hold up the roof from the inside. With the truss, there is also the insulation. It is important to have quality installed insulation because it provides resistance to heat flow and lowers your heating and cooling costs. Along with heating and cooling costs, insulation also:

  1. Regulates air leakage: Insulating your attic limits air leakage into your house. It’s estimated air leaking through your ceilings, floors and walls effects your home heating cost by 40 percent. By limiting the air leakage, you will be reducing your utility bills.
  2. Regulates air quality: When pollutants inevitably enter your home, such as dirt, radon, smoke and mold, the insulation in your attic helps to prevent the health effects of some of these air pollutants. These air pollutants can cause symptoms like headaches, respiratory problems and fatigue.
  3. Deters pests: No one wants a nest of mice, squirrels or birds living in your attic. Pest resistant insulation can keep unwanted pests from entering or building nests in your attic. This type of insulation can also help to prevent health hazards that come from animal droppings, dead animals and waste products.
  4. Prevents structural damage from moisture: Water vapor can seep into your roof, walls and ceiling causing wood rot, eroding cement, and growing mold and mildew. Insulation helps to prevent this. Open cell spray foam insulation is a vapor retardant and closed cell spray foam is a vapor barrier.
  5. Prevents frozen pipes: Proper insulation keeps your home warmer in the winter so it’s less likely your pipes will freeze and burst. A frozen pipe can cause significant water and plumbing damage to your home.
  6. Reduces noise: Insulating your attic reduces outside noise entering your home. It is especially useful during stormy weather when the rain is pouring down and thunder crashes send your dog running under the bed. Adding insulation does a lot to keep your home quiet and peaceful.  Insulation is rated with SPF which measures the sound transmission.
